Western Region College Bowl

The College Bowl is an annual academic contest for graduate students currently enrolled in healthcare programs that are part of the ACHE/HCE Higher Education Network.

The College Bowl began as a Jeopardy-style contest with teams answering questions related to health care policy and management. The format has evolved into a case study competition. Students use their creativity and knowledge of healthcare administration to solve the case study. The case studies revolve around real issues faced by healthcare executives and their organizations. Students are judged by the quality of the analysis and their presentation skills.

The Rules

Teams consist of no more than three members and one alternate member.

Executive graduate students are not eligible.

Two weeks prior to the competition, a case study is sent via e-mail to each team.

Work must be done by team members only, with minimal assistance from faculty advisors.

Team members may use only reference materials available to the general public.

Team members cannot contact the site or engage employees or partners of the sponsoring organizations, or organizations identified in the materials.

Cash prizes are given to winning teams in first, second, and third places.

On the day of the College Bowl, each team in the preliminary rounds has a maximum of 15 minutes to present. That is followed by a five-minute Question-and-Answer period with the judges. Three teams will go on to the final round.

During the final round, the remaining three teams will be given a new question or prompt based on the case study. The teams will then have five minutes to prepare their response and a maximum of 10 minutes to present, followed by another five-minute Question and Answer period with the judges.

The judging panel comprises high-level executives from diverse backgrounds. They are selected by the HCE Board of Directors and remain anonymous until the day of the competition.
